Finnmark FD-1: The One-Person Infrared Sauna That Runs on a Normal Outlet
The Finnmark FD-1 is a 1-person full-spectrum infrared sauna measuring 38" wide by 38" deep, and it plugs into a standard 120V household outlet. Those two facts are why it exists, and they are what make it the realistic choice for most homes in Staten Island, Brooklyn, and the rest of the five boroughs.
Most infrared saunas require a dedicated 240V circuit. That means an electrician, a permit in many cases, and a panel that has room for another double-pole breaker. Plenty of older New York homes do not have that room. The FD-1 draws 1.5 kW on a standard 15-amp 120V circuit, so in most cases it plugs into the wall the same way a space heater does.
Will It Actually Fit?
The honest answer for a 38" x 38" footprint is: almost always, but measure the path, not just the room.
- Floor space needed: roughly 3.5 x 3.5 feet, plus clearance to swing the glass door open and a few inches of breathing room at the back for the electrical connection.
- Ceiling height: the cabin stands 78" tall. A standard 8-foot ceiling leaves comfortable headroom. Finished basements with dropped ceilings or exposed ductwork are where people run into trouble, so measure the lowest point in the room, not the highest.
- Getting it inside: the FD-1 ships as modular panels rather than one assembled box, which is what makes it viable for row houses, walk-ups, and narrow staircases. Measure your tightest turn, not your widest doorway.
- Weight: 349 lbs fully assembled, spread across the footprint. That is comparable to a large aquarium or a loaded bookshelf and sits well within normal residential floor loading.
Interior dimensions are 34" W x 34" D x 70" H. It is a genuine one-person cabin — comfortable for sitting upright, not for lying down.
The Heating System, Explained Plainly
"Full spectrum" gets used loosely in this category. On the FD-1 it means two different heater types working together:
- Spectrum Plus™ short-wave heaters (UL-Listed) produce the more intense, penetrating heat you feel quickly and directly, like standing in direct sun.
- Spectrum Carbon 360° long-wave panels cover a much larger surface area at lower intensity, warming the cabin evenly so you are not hot on one side and cool on the other.
The combination is what lets a 120V cabin reach 170°F in under an hour. Short-wave alone would be intense but uneven; carbon alone would be gentle but slow. Many saunas at this price use carbon panels only.
Who the FD-1 Is Right For
Choose the FD-1 if you are the primary user, you are working with a spare bedroom corner, a basement alcove, or a converted closet, and you would rather avoid electrical work.
When to Size Up to the FD-2 or FD-3
Step up to the FD-2 (48" x 44") if a partner will use it with you, or you want room to stretch out. The FD-2 is also 120V, so you keep the no-electrician advantage.
Step up to the FD-3 (72" x 46") if you want 3 to 4 person capacity. Note that the FD-3 moves to 240V and does require a dedicated circuit.
The jump from FD-1 to FD-2 is the one most people reconsider after purchase. If there is any real chance a second person will use it regularly, the FD-2 is worth the extra footprint.

Freight cost: This product ships free to the contiguous United States. Canada is $490. On rare occasions, remote or complex delivery areas may not qualify for these rates — if that applies to your address, we will contact you before processing the order.
Delivery is curbside by freight carrier, so plan for help moving the crated panels from the curb into the house. The modular design means you are carrying individual panels rather than one large assembled unit.
Inspect the shipment before signing for it and note any damage to the crate on the delivery paperwork. Freight claims are far easier to resolve when damage is documented at delivery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an electrician to install the FD-1?
In most cases, no. The FD-1 runs on a standard 120V 15-amp circuit. What matters is that the circuit is not already loaded with other heavy draws. If the sauna will share a circuit with a window air conditioner, a freezer, or similar, have an electrician confirm the circuit can handle it.
How long does the FD-1 take to heat up?
Up to 170°F in under an hour from a cold start. Most users preheat 30 to 40 minutes for a comfortable session temperature.
Can the FD-1 go in a basement?
Yes, and basements are one of the most common placements. Check ceiling height at the lowest point, make sure the floor is level, and confirm the space is dry. Infrared saunas do not generate steam, so basement humidity is far less of a concern than with a traditional steam sauna.
Can the FD-1 go outdoors or in a garage?
No. The FD-1 is built for indoor, climate-controlled spaces. An unheated garage or covered patio will shorten the life of the cabinetry and electronics. For outdoor use, look at the Finnmark FD-6 or FD-7 barrel saunas.
How is infrared different from a traditional sauna?
A traditional sauna heats the air around you, typically to 180–195°F. Infrared warms your body more directly at a lower air temperature, around 120–170°F. Many people find infrared sessions easier to tolerate for longer, and it is why infrared cabins can run on lower power.
Does assembly require special tools?
The FD-1 uses a modular panel system designed for home assembly. Two people and basic hand tools are typically enough. Plan on a couple of hours.
What maintenance does the FD-1 need?
Very little. Wipe the benches and floor down after sessions, leave the door ajar afterward so the cabin dries out, and vacuum the interior occasionally. Cedar should not be sealed or varnished.
Is the FD-1 big enough for a tall person?
The 70" interior height and 34" depth accommodate most adults seated upright comfortably. If you are over 6'3", the FD-2's extra depth will feel noticeably better.
