Finnmark FD-5 Trinity XL: The Four-Person Hybrid Sauna

The FD-5 Trinity XL is the largest hybrid in the Finnmark range — a 4-person cabin combining full-spectrum infrared, a 4.5 kW Harvia KIP traditional rock heater, and a 192-diode red light therapy panel. It is the FD-4 Trinity scaled up to family size, with a substantially more powerful steam heater.

It requires 240V and a dedicated circuit. If that is a problem in your home, the FD-4 delivers the same three-mode capability on standard household power at half the capacity.

The Harvia KIP Heater Is the Real Upgrade

The jump from the FD-4 to the FD-5 is not only about seating. The traditional heater goes from a 1.9 kW Harvia Vega Compact to a 4.5 kW Harvia KIP — well over double the output.

That matters because steam performance depends on the mass of hot stone available. A larger heater holds more stones at higher temperature, which means:

• More steam per ladle of water.
• Faster recovery between pours, rather than waiting for the stones to come back up to temperature.
• A genuinely closer approximation of a traditional Finnish sauna session.

If the traditional steam experience is the main reason you want a hybrid, this is the model that delivers it properly. The FD-4's Vega Compact is capable, but it is sized for a small cabin.

Size and Fit

• Exterior: 75" W x 64" D x 83" H. This is a large cabin — over six feet wide and more than five feet deep.
• Interior: 71" W x 57.5" D x 75.5" H.
• Seating: double-tier bench seating for up to 4 people. The two-tier layout is worth understanding — heat stratifies, so the upper bench runs meaningfully hotter than the lower. That is traditional sauna design, and it lets people in the same session choose their own intensity.
• Weight: 654 lbs assembled. The heaviest indoor model in the range.
• Height: 83", same as the FD-4. Check your ceiling at its lowest point.

At 75" x 64", the FD-5 needs roughly 33 square feet of floor. That is a substantial share of a typical spare bedroom. Measure before you commit, and account for door swing.

Power Requirements

Two systems: 2.7 kW / 240 V / 18.8 A for the infrared, and a 4.5 kW Harvia KIP for the traditional heater.

This is a serious electrical installation. Have a licensed electrician evaluate your panel capacity before ordering. Homes with older 100-amp service may need an upgrade to support the FD-5 alongside existing loads, and that cost can be significant. Know the number in advance.

• Full-spectrum infrared — UL-Listed Spectrum Plus™ short-wave heaters paired with long-wave Spectrum Carbon 360° panels, up to 170°F. Lower air temperature, longer comfortable sessions.
• Traditional Finnish steam — the Harvia KIP with volcanic stones, up to 190°F. Ladle water for humidity. No plumbing needed.
• Red light therapy — Spectrum Red Light™ 192-diode LED panel at 650 nm, a separate system from the heaters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the real difference between the FD-4 and the FD-5?

Capacity and steam power. The FD-5 seats four on a double-tier bench instead of two, and its traditional heater is 4.5 kW versus 1.9 kW. The larger heater produces noticeably better steam. The trade-off is that the FD-5 requires a dedicated 240V circuit while the FD-4 runs on 120V.

Does the FD-5 need a dedicated electrical circuit?

Yes. The infrared system alone draws 2.7 kW at 240V, and the Harvia KIP heater is 4.5 kW. This requires a licensed electrician and an assessment of your panel capacity. Do this before ordering, not after delivery.

Why is the upper bench hotter than the lower one?

Heat rises, so air temperature is higher near the ceiling. This is intentional in traditional sauna design and is why the double-tier layout exists — people can choose their intensity within the same session, and you can start low and move up as you acclimate.

Do I need plumbing for the steam function?

No. Water is ladled onto the heated stones by hand. No water line, no drain.

How much floor space does the FD-5 need?

Roughly 33 square feet for the cabin itself, plus clearance for the door to swing and access at the back. In a typical 12 x 12 spare bedroom, it occupies a meaningful portion of the room.

Can the FD-5 be installed in a basement?

Often yes, and basements have the advantage of usually being nearer the electrical panel, which reduces the cost of the 240V run. The constraint is ceiling height — at 83" the cabin needs more headroom than many finished basements with dropped ceilings provide. Measure the lowest point.

Can four people comfortably use it at once?

Yes. The double-tier bench in a 71" wide interior genuinely accommodates four adults, which is more than can be said for many saunas marketed at that capacity.

Is the FD-5 suitable for outdoor installation?

No. It is an indoor cabin. For outdoor hybrid installations, the Finnmark FD-6 and FD-7 barrel saunas are built for exterior conditions.
