The Finnmark FD-3 is a full-spectrum infrared sauna with a 72" x 46" footprint and a 67" x 41" interior. Those six feet of interior bench width are the point: this is the first cabin in the Finnmark indoor range where an adult can stretch out fully rather than sitting upright.
It is also the model where the installation requirements change. The FD-3 runs on 240V and needs a dedicated circuit, which means an electrician. If avoiding electrical work is your priority, stop here and look at the FD-2 instead.
The 240V Question, Answered Honestly
The FD-3 draws 3.1 kW on 240 V / 15 A, single phase. Practically, that means:
- A dedicated 240V circuit run from your panel to the sauna location.
- Available space in your electrical panel for a double-pole breaker. This is the step that stops people in older homes with full panels.
- A licensed electrician, and in many municipalities an electrical permit.
Get an electrician to look at your panel before ordering, not after. The cost varies enormously depending on how far the sauna sits from your panel and whether your service has capacity. A short run in a finished basement near the panel is a modest job. A long run to a third-floor room in a house with a full 100-amp panel can mean a service upgrade, which is a different order of expense entirely.
None of that is a reason to avoid the FD-3. It is a reason to know the number before you commit.
Capacity: What 3–4 People Really Looks Like
- Three adults seated: comfortable, with room between people.
- Four adults seated: works, but it is close quarters. Fine for a family, tighter for four unrelated adults.
- One person lying down: yes. At 67" of interior width, most adults can lie flat along the bench. This is the single biggest experiential difference between the FD-3 and the smaller models.
- Two people, one lying down: not simultaneously.
A good number of FD-3 buyers are households of two who wanted the ability to stretch out, not families of four. That is a perfectly sensible reason to buy it.
Will It Fit In Your Space?
- Floor space: 72" wide by 46" deep — 6 feet by just under 4 feet — plus door swing and rear clearance.
- Ceiling height: 78" tall. Standard 8-foot ceilings are fine; measure the lowest obstruction.
- Getting it in: modular panels rather than an assembled box. The panels for a 72" cabin are large, so measure your tightest turn carefully — stair landings are the usual problem, not doorways.
- Weight: 536 lbs assembled across roughly 23 square feet. Fine for a slab or a properly framed floor. If you are placing it on an upper floor of an older building, it is worth a conversation with a contractor.
The Heating System
The FD-3 pairs Spectrum Plus™ short-wave heaters (UL-Listed) with Spectrum Carbon 360° long-wave panels. The short-wave elements provide intense, directly penetrating heat; the carbon panels spread lower-intensity warmth across a much larger surface.
Even heat distribution matters most in the largest cabin. In a six-foot-wide space, a carbon-only system leaves noticeably cooler zones at the ends of the bench. The 360° panel layout plus the extra power budget of a 240V circuit is what keeps the whole cabin at temperature rather than just the middle.
Maximum temperature is 170°F.

Freight cost: This product ships free to the contiguous United States. Canada is $490. On rare occasions, remote or complex delivery areas may not qualify for these rates — if that applies to your address, we will contact you before processing the order.
Delivery is curbside by freight carrier. At 536 lbs, arrange help in advance — the 72" panels are the largest in the Finnmark indoor range and are genuinely a multi-person carry.
Inspect the crate before signing and document any damage on the delivery paperwork. Freight claims are far easier to resolve with damage noted at delivery.

Does the FD-3 need a dedicated electrical circuit?
Yes. The FD-3 requires a dedicated 240V, 15-amp circuit installed by a licensed electrician. This is not optional and it is the main practical difference between the FD-3 and the smaller FD-1 and FD-2, which run on standard household outlets. Have an electrician assess your panel before ordering.
Can you lie down in the FD-3?

Does the FD-3 really fit four people?

Up to 170°F in under an hour. The 240V circuit gives it more heating power than the smaller models, which offsets the larger cabin volume.
How much does the FD-3 cost to run?
At 3.1 kW, an hour-long session uses about 3.1 kilowatt-hours. Multiply by your utility's rate per kWh for a local figure. It costs roughly twice as much per session as the FD-2, which is the trade for the larger cabin.
Can the FD-3 go in a basement?
Yes, and finished basements are a common placement — often a good one, since basements are usually closer to the electrical panel, which reduces the cost of running the 240V circuit. Confirm ceiling height at the lowest point and that the floor is level and dry.
Can the FD-3 be installed outdoors?
No. It is built for indoor, climate-controlled spaces. For outdoor installation, look at the Finnmark FD-6 or FD-7 barrel saunas, which are designed for exterior conditions.
How difficult is assembly?
The modular panel system is designed for home assembly, but the FD-3's panels are large and heavy. Plan on two people minimum, basic hand tools, and a half day. The electrical connection itself should be done by your electrician.
