Finnmark FD-4 Trinity: Infrared, Finnish Steam, and Red Light in One Cabin

The FD-4 Trinity is a 2-person hybrid sauna that does three things a standard infrared cabin cannot. It has full-spectrum infrared heaters, a real Harvia Vega stove with rocks for traditional Finnish steam, and a 192-diode red light therapy panel. Most people buying a home sauna are choosing between infrared and traditional. The FD-4 is for people who do not want to choose.

Why Hybrid Matters More Than It Sounds

Infrared and traditional saunas produce genuinely different experiences, and people tend to prefer them for different purposes:

  • Infrared runs at a lower air temperature — up to 170°F here — and warms your body more directly. Sessions are easier to sit through for longer. It is the mode most people use on a weekday evening.
  • Traditional steam runs hotter, up to 190°F, and heats the air around you. Pouring water on the rocks produces the humidity burst that defines a Finnish sauna. It is a more intense, shorter session.
  • Red light therapy is a separate thing entirely, operating at 650 nm and used for skin and recovery rather than heat.

Households often split on this. One person wants the gentler infrared session; the other grew up with real Finnish steam and finds infrared underwhelming. The FD-4 resolves that argument rather than making someone lose it.

The Traditional Heater: What You Should Know

The FD-4 includes a 1.9 kW Harvia Vega Compact stainless steel heater running on 120V. Harvia is a Finnish manufacturer and this is a genuine rock stove, not a simulated steam feature.

Practical notes:

  • You ladle water onto heated stones to create steam. There is no plumbing and no water line to install.
  • Because you are introducing moisture, the cabin needs to dry out after traditional sessions. Leave the door open afterward.
  • The Vega Compact is at the smaller end of Harvia's range, appropriate for a 2-person cabin. It is not going to behave like a commercial sauna stove, and it should not — that would be unsafe in a space this size.

Power Requirements

The FD-4 has two heating systems and therefore two power draws: 1.7 kW / 120 V / 15.9 A for the infrared, and 1.9 kW on 120V for the Harvia Vega.

Both are 120V, which is unusual for a hybrid and is what keeps the FD-4 installable in homes that could not support a 240V cabin. Have an electrician confirm your circuit arrangement can support both systems — this is more involved than the single-system FD-1 or FD-2, and worth a professional opinion rather than a guess.

Size and Fit

  • Exterior: 48" W x 48" D x 83" H. Note the height — at 83 inches, the FD-4 is five inches taller than the FD-1 through FD-3, to accommodate the stove. Check your ceiling carefully, especially in basements.
  • Interior: 44" W x 45" D x 75" H.
  • Capacity: 2 people seated comfortably.
  • Weight: 485 lbs assembled.
  • Assembly: modular design for home setup.

The square 48" x 48" footprint is worth noting. Unlike the rectangular FD-2, the FD-4 needs roughly equal depth and width, which changes which corners and alcoves it fits into.

Red Light Therapy Panel

The integrated Spectrum Red Light™ 192-diode LED panel operates at 650 nm. It is a distinct system from the infrared heaters — red light therapy is about light wavelength reaching skin tissue, not about heat.

If you have been considering a separate red light panel, factor that into the comparison. A standalone panel of comparable output is a meaningful cost on its own.

FD-4 or FD-5 Trinity XL?

Model Capacity Exterior Infrared Steam Heater
FD-4 2 person 48" W x 48" D x 83" H 1.7 kW / 120 V 1.9 kW Harvia Vega
FD-5 XL 4 person 75" W x 64" D x 83" H 2.7 kW / 240 V 4.5 kW Harvia KIP

The FD-4 stays on 120V; the FD-5 moves to 240V and requires a dedicated circuit. If you want hybrid capability without electrical work, the FD-4 is the one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the infrared and the steam heater at the same time?

They are separate systems intended for separate session types. Most owners use one or the other depending on what they want that day — infrared for a longer, gentler session, traditional steam for a hotter and shorter one. Follow the manual's guidance on simultaneous operation.

Do I need a water line or plumbing?

No. You ladle water onto the heated stones by hand. There is no plumbing to install and no drain required.

Does the FD-4 need a 240V circuit?

No — both the infrared system and the Harvia Vega heater run on 120V, which is what makes the FD-4 installable where a 240V hybrid would not be. Because there are two systems drawing power, have an electrician confirm your circuit arrangement supports both.

How is this different from a regular infrared sauna?

A standard infrared cabin has one heat source and no steam capability. The FD-4 adds a genuine Finnish rock stove and a red light therapy panel. If you only ever want infrared, the FD-2 covers that at a lower price and a smaller footprint.

Will the ceiling height be a problem?

Possibly, and it is the most-missed detail on this model. At 83" the FD-4 is five inches taller than the FD-1 through FD-3. An 8-foot ceiling gives you about 13 inches of clearance, which is fine, but finished basements with dropped ceilings frequently do not have it. Measure the lowest point in the room.

Does using the steam function cause moisture problems?

Not if the cabin is allowed to dry out. Leave the door open after a traditional session. The cedar interior naturally resists moisture, and the volume of water involved is small — a few ladles, not a steam room's worth.

Is the red light panel a real therapy device or a mood light?

It is a 192-diode panel operating at 650 nm, which is within the wavelength range used in red light therapy. It is distinct from the chromotherapy ceiling lights, which are ambient lighting.

Can the FD-4 go outdoors?

No. It is built for indoor installation. For an outdoor hybrid with both infrared and a rock heater, look at the Finnmark FD-6 or FD-7 barrel saunas.

Questions Before You Buy?

We are an authorized Finnmark dealer based in Staten Island, New York. The Trinity models involve more installation planning than a standard infrared cabin. Send us your ceiling height and a description of your electrical setup and we will tell you what is realistic before you order.
